Classroom Portico Training 

Course Outlines and Pre-requisites

This page provides specific information about the classroom based courses for Portico including the following:

Information about training on the basic Portico functions using Computer Based Training can be found on the general page on Training for Administrative Systems. Please see the UCL Training Booking System for dates of scheduled classroom courses.

Module Registration

The Module Registration classroom course covers the following topics:

  • Overview of Module Registration process
  • Module selection from the student perspective
  • Approving modules by the teaching department
  • Approving modules by the parent department
  • Amending module selections
  • Module Registration reports (including reports for class lists)

The course lasts up to 3 hours and provides demonstrations and exercises on the above topics. On completion of the course you will receive level 3 access for the Student Personal Details role and level 2 access for the Module Selection role.

Assessments &  Awards Course Outline

The Assessments & Awards classroom course lasts 3 hours and covers the following topics:

  • Overview of assessments, progression and awards processes
  • Revision of Web Mark Entry
  • Processing assessment marks (including agreeing marks, moderation and putting students into reassessment)
  • Managing reassessments
  • Calculating progression and award decisions
  • Assessment and award reports
  • Agreeing progression and award decisions
  • Progression and award minutes

The course lasts up to 3 hours and provides demonstrations and exercises on the above topics. On completion of the course you will receive level 3 access for the Award and Progression role.

Pre-requisites for Classroom Courses

There are pre-requisite training online packages for our classroom based Portico training sessions as follows.

Module Registration
  • Data Protection Act
  • Portico Introduction Exercise
Assessments & Awards
  • Data Protection Act
  • Portico Introduction Exercise
  • Web Mark Entry

You do not need to repeat the pre-requisites each time you attend a session. The Data Protection Act package is a requirement for having your Portico access level raised and can be completed after attending a training session.

Accessing Moodle

  1. Moodle is accessed from here, http://moodle.ucl.ac.uk/. Use your UCL username and password to log in.
  2. The Student Systems 2013 course should already be displayed in your 'My Courses' list when you log in.
  3. All our online training modules will run in any uptodate web browser as long as the pop-up blocker is turned off.

Data Protection Act

Although not part of Portico, you will need to complete the Computer Based Training module if you need to gain access to certain functions in Portico. This can be completed before or after you attend a classroom session but must be completed before your access level in Portico is raised. To access the course:

  1. Log in to Moodle.
  2. If you don't see the Data Protection Act course listed under my courses, search for "Data Protection Act" in the search box on the right hand side of the page.
  3. Select the Data Protection Act course from the search results (there should only be one result) and click Yes to enrol when prompted.
  4. Click on the Data Protection Act activity and work through the course module.

Portico Introduction Exercise

The Introduction Exercise covers Introduction, Navigation and Enquiry activities presented in the Student Systems 2013 course. The exercise must be completed before attending the classroom training. To access the course:

  1. Log in to Moodle.
  2. If you don't see the Student Systems 2013 course listed under 'My Courses' please contact:

    MS Training Support E-mail
  3. Work through the modules under the Introduction, Navigation and Enquiry topic.
  4. Complete the Introduction Exercise at the end of the topic.

Web Mark Entry

This exercise covers the steps necessary to input results on Portico. This must be completed before attending an Awards & Assessments training session.

  1. Log in to Moodle.
  2. If you don't see the Student Systems 2013 course listed under 'My Courses' please contact

  3. Complete the Web Mark Entry exercise in 'Assessments' topic.

Refresher Sessions

Refresher sessions are normally provided for both Module Registrations and Assessments and Awards. The topics covered are the same as those above however, the sessions take the form of a one hour demonstration in a lecture theatre with no exercises. Users must have previously attended one of the classroom sessions in order to attend a refresher session.
