There are many software applications available to students on campus via the desktop@UCL service.
How do I get software for my own computer?

Before you get going, there are a few things you need to be aware of:
- Software versions
For both consistency and compatibility you should download the software version you use at UCL, rather than the latest one. This applies to both staff and students.
- Home use
While home use is permitted under some of our agreements, this does not amount to a personal licence. Use of software is subject to personal educational development, studying and academic research. By using software that UCL has made available for home use, you agree to these terms and conditions.
How do I buy a personal license for an application?
There are many suppliers offering discounted rates for students:
- Adobe products (Photoshop, Acrobat, Dreamweaver, InDesign etc.)
Students get 65% off the retail directly from Adobe.
A suite consisting of a group of geographic information system (GIS) software products).
ArcGIS is available for download from the software database. Download and follow the instructions carefully.
- Anti-Virus software
UCL has agreements with F-secure and Sophos to allow registered students to download virus protection for their home use.
CAD (Computer Aided Design or Computer Aided Drafting) software application for 2D and 3D design and drafting. Now available on Mac and Windows. AutoCAD is available for free to UCL students .
- EndNote and Reference Manager
Reference management software packages, used to manage bibliographies and references when writing essays and articles.

UCL has a site licence for UCL machines which can be downloaded from the UCL Software Database.
This software is also available on desktop@UCL machines and desktop@UCL Anywhere.
Processing and analysing geospatial imagery. ENVI is free to all students while studying at UCL.

Office 365 - 5 free Installs
As a student you are entitled to 5 free installs of Office 365 while at UCL. You can find out how to access this software by visiting our Microsoft Office 365 web pages.
A computational software program used in scientific, engineering, and mathematical fields and other areas of technical computing. Mathematica is free to all students while studying at UCL.
High-level language and interactive environment that enables you to perform computationally intensive tasks faster than with traditional programming languages such as C, C++, and Fortran. Matiab free to all students while studying at UCL.
Software library of numerical analysis routines. It comprises a collection of 1500 mathematical and statistical algorithms. Areas covered include linear algebra, optimization, quadrature, differential equations, regression analysis. NAG is available as a free download to UCL students.
Origin is an easy-to-use software application that provides powerful data analysis and publication-quality graphing capabilities tailored to the needs of scientists and engineers. Origin is free to all students while studying at UCL.
- PDF Converter Pro
Software used for creating/editing PDF files. UCL recommends you use PDF Converter and not Acrobat Pro. PDF Converter is free to all students while studying at UCL.
An integrated system of software products that enables the programmer to perform: data entry, retrieval, management, and mining report writing and graphics statistical analysis business planning, forecasting, and decision support operations. SAS is free to all students while studying at UCL.
A statistical Package, designed for analysing data. SPSS is free to all students while studying at UCL.
