Dealing with Junk email


You have probably noticed that many of the e-mails you receive are marked with {SPAM?} in the subject field. Incoming external e-mail is scanned for spam. Messages are given a 'spam score' from a set of 400 rules. Currently we mark any message scoring 5 and above as {SPAM?} which gives a detection rate of about 80 per cent. As with anti-virus software, it has to be regularly updated as people continually find ways around it and we are working to improve our detection rate.

It is certainly possible to be more aggressive about blocking spam but this inevitably means that some genuine mail is also trapped in this way. Taking this sort of decision at a institutional level can therefore be tricky, but more rigorous filtering may be helpful for many individuals.
