Workshop

Staffed by qualified engineers, the Institute workshop provides a general craft engineering service specialising in the design and construction of instruments and apparatus to customers' requirements. Our work is based on the tradition of high quality manufacture and design, we constantly seek to employ new and improved methods to maintain the highest possible standards.

Our fully equipped workshop means we are able to work with many different types of materials, including mild steel, stainless steel, aluminium, brass, copper, bronze, acrylic, nylon, acetal, tufnol, PTFE (Teflon), polycarbonate, in the form of rod, flat bar, angle, sheet, meshing, and tubing. If required other materials can also be obtained. We would be happy to discuss with you any jobs requiring electronic input.

Examples of our past work include:
  • The design and manufacture of specialised Acrylic Flow Measuring Chambers and a multi point Motorised Magnetic Stirring Unit, for holding the chambers, to enable controlled agitation of specimens to be achieved
  • The modification of a number of Visual Field Analyzer units so as to enable them to be used to assess night as well as daylight vision in patients
  • The manufacture of a number of Visual Field Assessment units
  • The design and manufacture of microscope incubation cabinets
  • Opto-Mechanical components
  • Light boxes to numerous designs specifications
  • Camera and photographic adaptor rings and fitments
  • Microscope adaptor rings and fitments
  • Electrode etching and pulling machines and numerous designs of electrode holders
  • Acrylic gradient formers, electrophoresis boxes, radiation chambers, boxes, shields, etc
  • Framework construction i.e. Instrument trolleys and tables
  • Calibrating and servicing of adjustable pipettes
