Our molecular genetics researchers have been enormously successful in discovering genes that cause eye disease. Together with Moorfields Eye Hospital our researchers have established a database of patients with known genetic abnormalities enabling us to contact them as swiftly as possible when new treatments become available. Many diseases have environmental causes and over the years the Institute has been responsible for many epidemiological studies. We are currently looking at eye disease in a large epidemiological study in East Anglia and have close links with the London School of Tropical Hygiene and Medicine and the UCL Institute of Child Health.
