Graduate Courses in Ophthalmology

The first term emphasis is on medical retinal disorders and comprises lectures, seminars, case sessions, outpatient clinic attendances in general medical retinal and speciality medical retinal clinics, attendance at the uveitis course with patients, covers electrodiagnostics and fluorescein angiography teaching. The lecturers are experts in their field. In addition practical sessions will be run on how to laser using the lasers including the PASCAL laser, doing and interpreting OCTs including using a Spectralis OCT and doing intravitreal injections.
The second term has a similar teaching and training structure with an emphasis on surgical retina including paediatrics, retinopathy of prematurity and offers additionally attendance at operating theatre sessions.
Alongside this, there are sessions on giving presentations, using literature search engines, using reference manager software, how to assess a paper, writing a dissertation and others. Assessments are by MCQ exam or assessed seminar presentations. Access to UCL/IOO educational facilities including the library and electronic journals comes as part of the course.
For those wanting to do either the medical or surgical retinal term, a Certificate course is available. For those wanting to do both, the Diploma course is available. For those wishing to obtain a Masters degree, the third term is taken writing a dissertation on a subject of your choice in this subject area – it is not necessary to stay in London for this as it can be written anywhere and posted to us when complete.
