Your Publication 'Footprint'

  • Preparing for REF2014 (code: RML08) This course is for research-active staff from the UCL Institute of Neurology only. The session will introduce the steps you can take now to make sure you are ready for REF2014. The session focuses on: - what UCL systems will be used for REF2014 - how to register your publications in the UCL Research Publications Service (RPS) - how to set up a researcherid profile - how to use 'bibliometrics' to help choose your best publications.   • Using UCL's Research Publications Service: RPS (code: RML01) This course is for research-active ION staff & research students (NB: it is NOT suitable for NHS staff). The course will teach you how to maintain your user profile within the UCL RPS service. You will learn how to check & edit your list of publications and how to adjust your profile settings to optimise the auto-retrieval of your publications from PubMed & Web of Science. A valid UCL computing account & access to the UCL RPS are required for this course. Please contact us if you are not sure whether you have access. Also see our online guide to RPS.
  • Maximising & measuring your publications impact (code: RML04) This course is aimed at research-active staff & research students who wish to explore the 'impact' of their own & others' publications using bibliometrics. The tools which allow you to do this are of increasing importance to researchers who wish to demonstrate the value and quality of their research. The course focuses on key measures such as citation counts & h-indexes using Web of Science & Scopus. Also see our webpage about impact.

Search Skills

  • Searching NHS databases & ejournals (code: RML03) This course is aimed at NHS staff (NB: it is NOT suitable for UCL staff). The course will help you to make the most of NHS databases & ejournals, including NHS Evidence. A valid NHS Athens account is required for this course.   • Searching Pubmed (code: RML05) This course is aimed at anyone who wishes to improve their search skills and to explore Pubmed's tools and tricks to enhance their search experience. Also see our online guide to PubMed.

Managing References & Formatting Bibliographies

  • Endnote (code: RML06) This course is an introduction to Endnote X3. Please make sure that you have access to the software before attending the course. Endnote is a bibliographic management tool which allows you to store data about publications and to generate formatted bibliographies. (Please note: Endnote offers both Windows & Mac versions; the training session is based on the Windows version). Also see our online guide to Endnote.
  • Reference Manager (code: RML02)This course is an introduction to Reference Manager (version 12). Please make sure that you have access to the software before attending the course. Reference Manager is a bibliographic management tool which allows you to store data about publications and to generate formatted bibliographies. (Please note: Reference Manager only runs on Windows; Mac users may wish to use Endnote). Also see our online guide to Reference Manager.

In addition to these courses, we offer occasional training sessions focusing on a different database. Currently we cover the following databases: British Nursing Index, CINAHL, Cochrane, Embase, Medline, PsycInfo, Web of Science, etc. If you have an interest in other databases, please send us your requests and we will let you know whether we can provide some training. Each course aims to help you improve your search skills & develop more effective search strategies. A range of online guides is also available.

Library induction sessions

  • We offer brief library orientation & induction sessions for all new students and members of staff at the UCL Institute of Neurology and the National Hospital for Neurology & Neurosurgery.  The induction includes: registration to use the library, a tour of the library space, and, a brief introduction to the resources available in print and online.
