PhD Opportunities
Research Degrees: MPhil/PhD/MD(Res)
Duration of Programme
- Full time MPhil/PhD: usually 3 years
- Part time MPhil/PhD: usually 5 years
- MD (Res): minimum registration period of 2 years

Entry Requirements
For MPhil/PhD: A UK Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate subject, awarded with first or upper second-class Honours, or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard from a university or educational institution of university rank, or a recognised taught Master’s degree, is required.
For MD (Res): Applicants must have been awarded the University of London MBBS, or be eligible for full registration or hold limited registration with the General Medical Council (GMC), and either be a member of staff of the University of London or of an associated hospital or academic unit of general practice at the time of carrying out the work described in the thesis. MD(Res) applicants are normally hospital clinicians undertaking research associated with their employment. Other applicants wishing to pursue clinical research should apply for MPhil/PhD admission.
Monitoring & Assessment
Research Proposal: to be submitted within 6 months of start date, for approval by Higher Degrees Sub Committee.
Transfer from MPhil to PhD: between months 12-21 for full time
students, and between months 21 and 42 for part time students.
Closing date for applications: applications are accepted throughout the academic year for non funded PhD Projects.
