Practical Neurology (30 credits)

Summary

The module enables the student to acquire, and/or refresh their clinical skills in history taking, diagnosis, treatment and management of a patient with a neurological disorder.

Aims

The aim of the module is for students to acquire and/or refresh their clinical skills and knowledge so that they are better equipped to study, and subsequently diagnose & treat a range of neurological conditions.  

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the module the students will be trained in taking a clinical history, and have acquired skills in the diagnosis and treatment of a patient with a neurological condition. They will have observed a variety of outpatient clinic settings, attended and participated in clinical meeting and rounds, had experience of presenting cases to their peers, and received teaching at the bedside to further improve their clinical skills. Through their specialist attachment they will have experienced first hand the work of a clinical Firm and interacted with clinical and non clinical colleagues at all levels with in the Firm. The method of teaching will encourage students to gain confidence in approaching patients and communicating facts about neurological diseases. 

Assessment criteria

OSCE and a short case examination (clinical scenarios with live patients, videos, history taking and ethics)

Lectures

  • Weekly bedside teaching sessions
  • Student led case presentation sessions
  • Weekly clinical teaching rounds at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery
  • Out-patient clinics at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery
  • Visit to Chalfont Centre for Epilepsy
  • Visit to Stoke Mandeville Hospital (Centre for Spinal Injuries)


Requirements: Medical qualifications (graduate medical degree), at least 2 years postgraduate experience in clinical medicine, registration with the GMC (or equivalent national authority for overseas students), and at least 6 months previous clinical experience in clinical neurology.
