FAQ
Starting Your Research Degree
1. How many supervisors do I need?
All UCL research students need two UCL supervisors: a principal and a subsidiary supervisor.
Both supervisors need to be approved by UCL before they can start supervising you.
If you or your proposed supervisor are unclear as to whether they have been approved, contact the Education Unit for clarification.
Research Project Proposal
1. What is a research proposal?
This is an internal (to ION) requirement for students typically within the first six months of their registration
The research proposal is basically a structured abstract of what research is being proposed and the timeline to which it will be completed.
2-4 sides A4 are all that is required.
The proposal goes to the ION Higher Degrees Sub Committee for approval and is noted in our local records.
Transfer from MPhil to PhD
1. Who needs to be at my transfer viva?
Two independent academic colleagues. They can either be from your ION research department, or another ION research department if appropriate.
UCL advise that your subsidiary supervisor should chair your transfer viva.
2. When can I transfer from MPhil to PhD
You can transfer after 12 months of registration, but most students
usually transfer approx 18 months in.
3. What do I need to do to transfer from MPhil to PhD?
Completion of a 10,000 thesis, viva and deptartmental presentation. You must also complete the IoN transfer forms and UCL transfer forms, both of which can be found on the Research student Moodle site.
