"Straying to the hospital basement during his early medical training at St Vincent's Hospital in Dublin, Ireland, Alan Thompson found a door labelled “MS research”. Pushing open the door revealed a completely empty room. Many people would have decided on the spot that multiple sclerosis (MS) research was clearly not a flourishing field for a young doctor. But that was just what attracted Thompson.
