IOE centre welcomes new member of research team

28 March 2018

The ALLICC lab and Centre for Language, Literacy and Numeracy: Research and Practice (LLNR&P) have welcomed a new addition to their research team this term.

Ambra Fastelli and Chloe Marshall

Ambra Fastelli is a PhD student from the Human Inspired Technology Centre at the University of Padova, Italy. She joins UCL Institute of Education (IOE) for the second time, under the supervision of Professor Chloë Marshall.

Two years ago, Ambra visited the IOE as part of her post-Masters Erasmus+ traineeship. She was then involved in an investigation of the semantic fluency of deaf children that resulted in a publication in the International Journal of Language and Communication Disorders.

Now in the second year of her PhD, she is coming for a six-month internship as part of her PhD programme. Her research is funded by the Bruno Kessler Foundation (FBK, Italy) and will focus on implicit learning in deaf and hearing children.

Implicit learning is involved in the learning, recall, and production of sequences of information. It is important for many aspects of cognition, and especially for language development. The findings could be useful for shaping innovative interventions to strengthen the learning abilities of children.

Ms Fastelli will be visiting mainstream schools with a specialist unit for children with a hearing impairment. If you would like to hear more about the project and be involved, please do get in touch: a.fastelli@ucl.ac.uk
