IOE and EMI Music Sound Foundation announce new bursary for Music Education course

The Music Education MA provides tools for interrogating musical and educational assumptions, values and practices and helps students to expand their understanding of effective music teaching, evaluation and assessment.

Candidates can apply with dissertation research in several streams, including:

• The wider benefits of music, such as music and literacy, music and mathematics, music and science, music, and social inclusion
• The use of music technology in supporting learning
• Music, adolescence, and mental health
• Addressing gender differences in musical participation
• Effective practice in whole-class instrumental teaching, and sustaining learning beyond it
• Music, well-being, and mental health
• Engaging vulnerable and marginalised groups, or those less likely to participate in music
• Introducing new musical genres into classroom music

A further £5,000 will be available to help recipients fund resources for their practical work.

"The EMI Music Sound Foundation bursary represents a unique opportunity for us to help MA students to further music education in the UK. Successful candidates will advance our understanding of music education, its teaching and learning, surrounding issues, and policy in line with a wide range of significant themes. Through their MA research and development activities, they will be making real impacts in schools and other educational contexts."

The EMI Music Sound Foundation is an independent music education charity established in 1997 to celebrate the centenary of EMI Records and to improve young peoples' access to music education in the UK.
