IOE appoints Director for new Centre for Research on Teachers and Teaching

Professor Martin Mills has been appointed Director of the new Centre for Research on Teachers and Teaching at the UCL Institute of Education (IOE).
Currently Head of the School of Education at The University of Queensland (UQ) in Australia, Professor Mills’ research explores social justice, pedagogies, school reform, teachers’ work, alternative education and gender. He is a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia and has held Visiting Professorships at Kings College London, Roehampton and Queen’s Belfast.
Speaking of his appointment, Professor Mills said:
“I am thrilled to be coming to the UCL Institute of Education (IOE). Through the Centre, I will be seeking to work closely with other academics across the IOE to engage with ideas related to, amongst others, the purposes of education, issues of teacher identity in contemporary education settings, the types of teaching and curricula that ‘make a difference’ and the role of teacher education in enhancing quality and equity across education systems. A key aim of the Centre will be to ensure that its research has an influence on policy and engages with the public and the broad education community.”
The new Centre aims to re-energise research activity in the field of teacher education. Through focusing on large-scale research, it will generate evidence on effective practice for preparing new teachers and will develop practitioners further into their teaching careers.
The Centre will be a resource for IOE staff as well as the wider community, both nationally and internationally.

The Centre will sit within a department that is rich in Initial Teacher Education (ITE) but engage with research activity and teacher education across the institution.
