Gender, labour and diverse families

We research personal and policy challenges of balancing paid work and family life from the perspectives of women, men, children, and employers.

Our expertise

It includes maternity/paternity leave, flexible work arrangements, workplace cultures, and gender equality measures. Our interest in this area span:

  • theoretical perspectives on gender, work and family
  • gender profiling of care and employment
  • class and ethnic inequalities
  • fathers' work-family balance
  • work-family life, and
  • polices for older people.

Methods

We hold methodological strength around secondary analysis of employment and time use data and qualitative case studies.

Funders

These include the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), UN, European Commission, the Leverhulme Trust.

Comparative policy studies

We are specialists in comparative policy studies of national and workplace measures to support working parents, with particular focus across Europe, Asia, and North America.
