Preparation for Academic Studies in Higher Education
The summer course in Preparation for Academic Studies in Higher Education (PASHE) is specially designed for IOE students intending to undertake postgraduate courses in Education or related disciplines.
- Course overview
This is a full-time English for Academic Purposes course designed for postgraduate international students who need to improve their academic English for postgraduate studies in Education.
For students holding conditional offers for UCL Institute of Education courses, the PASHE end-of-course assessments (in academic reading, writing, speaking and listening) meet UCL’s English language requirement.

Deadline for applications
You should make your application as early as possible and by the official deadline listed on the right. Your place on a course is only confirmed when you have paid your fees, and you should expect to do this very shortly after being offered a place.
Other important information
Students attending the PASHE course with a Tier 4 visa can extend their visa in the UK at the end of the course, if they wish to do so. The normal process for UCL conditional offer holders is that at the end of the PASHE course test results will be sent to Central Admissions at UCL. Students who have achieved the required level will then have their offers made unconditional and they will be issued with new CASs so that they can extend their visas.
Paying tuition fees
Course fees will normally be paid in full prior to the beginning of the course. Offer holders will receive information via email on how to formally accept their offer, pay the course fees and apply for UCL accommodation.
Full refunds of course fees minus a £100 administration charge will be made in the event of formal visa refusals where a further visa application is not possible. Claims must be made in writing and be supported by the relevant Refusal of Entry Clearance letter. Other requests for refunds will be considered only in the event that the course is full and a replacement can be found to take the applicant's place on the course.

- Entry requirements
Which PASHE course you can apply for depends on both your current level of English and the English level required for your future UCL Institute of Education degree programme. However, if your current language levels are higher than these or if you have an unconditional offer to start your degree programme, you are still welcome to join the course at any entry point:
12 week students (Unit 1 starters):
- IELTS for UKVI score: 5.5 (5.5 minimum in each subscore: reading, writing, speaking and listening) for students requiring UCL ‘good level’
- IELTS for UKVI 6.0 (6.0 minimum in each subscore: reading, writing, speaking and listening) for students requiring UCL ‘advanced level’
8 week students (Unit 2 starters):
- IELTS for UKVI score: 6.0 (6.0 minimum in each subscore: reading, writing, speaking and listening) for students requiring UCL ‘good level’
- IELTS for UKVI score: 6.5 (6.5 minimum in each subscore: reading, writing, speaking and listening) for students requiring UCL ‘advanced level’
6 week students (Unit 3 starters*):
- IELTS for UKVI score: 6.5 (6.5 minimum in each subscore: reading, writing, speaking and listening) for students requiring UCL ‘good level’
- IELTS for UKVI score: 7.0 (7.0 minimum in each subscore: reading, writing, speaking and listening) for students requiring UCL ‘advanced level’
Please be aware that scores cannot be rounded up when evaluating eligibility.
Students with unconditional offers may have other UCL accepted language qualifications at the same level.
* Note that ‘Unit 3 starters’ begin two weeks before Unit 3 commences to allow for adequate tuition and preparation ahead of final assessments.
- Course learning outcomes
By the end of the PASHE course, students should be able to:
1. Operate at a linguistic level required for entry to postgraduate level study as stipulated by UCL English language requirements.
2. Identify line of argument in and critically review academic texts at a level appropriate for the commencement of postgraduate level study.
3. Recognise features of academic texts and use this knowledge to plan, draft, review and edit written assignments at a level appropriate for the commencement of postgraduate level study.
4. Recognise the main points of lectures and take notes effectively.
5. Plan, draft, review and edit a presentation at a level appropriate for the commencement of postgraduate level study.
6. Select and use source material effectively, with in-text citation and a corresponding list of references.
7. Read widely, engaging with depth, volume and complexity of text appropriate at postgraduate study.
8. Reflect upon and respond to formative feedback in written and oral tasks.
9. Apply independent learning and study strategies, including digital literacy, for research and writing in postgraduate education studies.
10. Engage actively and fluently in cross-cultural communication by working in diverse groups, as appropriate for seminars at postgraduate level study.
- Course outline
The course will focus on academic texts in the field of Education and include:
- English for academic purposes (EAP) and language development
- Critical reading, writing, speaking and listening
- Structure and coherence in academic writing
- Note-taking, summarising and referencing skills
- Presentation and seminar speaking skills (including pronunciation)
- Lectures by IOE academics
- Language preparation for research
- Elective options
- An introduction to the IOE library and UCL’s virtual learning environment (VLE)
- All course materials
- A social programme
Unit 1 focuses on general English for academic purposes (EAP) and will offer a broad introduction to the above areas. In particular, students will:
- Develop structure, coherence, accuracy and clarity at paragraph level, by planning, drafting, reviewing and redrafting a portfolio of short written tasks
- Be introduced to academic conventions (citation and referencing)
- Deliver short weekly presentations
Unit 2 focuses on the notion of criticality in postgraduate studies and will continue to develop learners’ proficiency in EAP skills. In particular, students will:
- Continue to improve structure, coherence, accuracy and clarity in writing at a higher level by planning, drafting, reviewing and redrafting a critical review of an academic text
- Improve and develop confidence in following academic conventions (citation and referencing)
- Participate in weekly simulated seminar discussions and deliver at least one presentation
Unit 3 focuses on identifying and developing argument, and will continue to develop proficiency in EAP skills. In particular, students will:
- Continue to improve structure, coherence, accuracy and clarity in writing at a level appropriate for the commencement of postgraduate study by planning, drafting, reviewing and redrafting a fully referenced argument essay
- Consolidate knowledge and gain further practice in following academic conventions (citation and referencing)
- Participate in weekly simulated seminar discussions and deliver presentations.
- Complete end-of course assessments in each skill (academic speaking, listening, reading and writing)
- In small groups, develop and present an academic poster for a course poster conference, based on a course research project
- Teaching and learning
Tutor groups are kept small, with an average of 12 students in each class. Larger group sessions will include weekly lectures, elective options and preparation for research workshops.
The PASHE course provides 17 ½* teaching contact hours per week (except during the final two assessment weeks). However, students are expected to spend significantly more hours working on assignments and self-study tasks in the UCL Institute of Education’s Library or from home using the PASHE Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) and/or the UCL Centre for Languages and International Education (CLIE)’s Self Access Centre website.
Each PASHE Unit includes:
- Seminars and workshops facilitated by course tutors
- Lectures delivered by IOE academics
- Individual and group tutorials – each student will have a 20-minute individual tutorial each week (except during the final two assessment weeks)
- Regular pair and group discussions
- Formative feedback throughout the course
- Peer evaluation and feedback throughout the course
- Autonomous learning as appropriate at postgraduate level (at least 10 hours per week of self-study)
- Feedback and assessment
The course will include:
- Continuous formative feedback on course tasks and assignments.
- End of course summative assessment in the form of a test in each skill (speaking, listening, reading and writing).
- The end of course assessments are a compulsory part of the course and are taken by all PASHE students who hold a conditional offer.
- A satisfactory performance in these tests is required for entry to UCL Institute of Education programmes.
- You do not need to take the IELTS or any other language test as a required part of this programme. However, you may also take an IELTS test outside of UCL Institute of Education if you wish to do so.
