Title: Literacy Foundations: Principles, Progression and Application of phonics and phonological awareness

Outline: Theory and practice of the foundations of phonological awareness and application of phonic knowledge in reading and writing. Core learning includes phonics terminology, the role of phonological awareness, the teaching sequence for discrete phonics lessons, progression and assessment and the application of phonics through extended provision.

Audience: teachers, practitioners, NQTs and teaching assistants in F Stage and KS1

Course fee: £135 for single registrations or £245 for two registrations from the same school (VAT free)

Title: Literacy Foundations: From mark making to writing

Outline: This course will develop participants' understanding of the complexity of the writing process and writing development.  Core learning includes observing and assessing progression in writing, the role played by schema, motor skill development and handwriting, fine-tuned teaching of the writing process and ways of shaping the learning environment to support writing development.

Outline: Understanding and being understood are essential for both learning and social interaction and are fundamental to children's development (Communication Trust). Learn more about how the learning of children in R and Y1 can 'float on a sea of talk' (Barnes).

This inspiring day will enable participants to
• explore approaches that put talk at the heart of learning, through  a range of practical strategies for guided and independent learning
• understand how to assess and plan for the development of speaking and listening
• develop practical text-based activities with two picture story texts which are included in the course fee
• know how to develop the classroom environment and provision to extend and develop speaking and listening
