Clinical studies

The Critical Care Trials team are the clinical research limb of the Division of Critical Care and the Bloomsbury Institute of Intensive Care Medicine. The team are composed of a clinical lead (Dr David Brealey) and 5.3 whole time equivalent research nurses.

The Team aim to attract and deliver a wide portfolio of studies that are pertinent not just to Critical Care but the whole Emergency Pathway. As such they frequently work outside the physical walls of Critical Care recruiting patients across the hospital from the Emergency Department to Day Case Chemotherapy. The last 3 years has seen a marked expansion in trials run, by the end of 2013 they will be running over 10 protocols.

There has been an increase in the number of patients recruited, over 300 patients a year, a 50% increase on 2 year ago. The team are able to execute highly demanding early phase drug trials enabling UCH to frequently top the recruitment tables or be the only UK site to deliver the trial.

The Team receive support from the CBRC and thus prioritise Experimental Medicine projects and UCL investigators. Their work on the iPAT study enabled a successful NIHR grant application of £2.1m, whilst the Faron study enabled Dr Bellingan to gain a €6m FP7 grant to develop the drug further. The table below outlines their activity since 2010.
