Research activities
Revision of the Bliss Bibliographic Classification
This is a long-term project, in conjunction with the Bliss Classification Association for the complete revision of Bliss's Bibliographic Classification incorporating modern classification theory, particularly the principles of facet analysis. To date 13 volumes have been published, the most recent being that for Class W, Fine arts. Current work includes the development of a faceted thesaurus format using Music as a test discipline.
UDC revision
I have been working on the revision of parts of the UDC since 1997. Work to date includes the revision of the auxiliary tables, including new auxiliaries for properties, processes, operations and relations, and a completely new Class 2, Religion.

Research projects
Facet analytical theory in knowledge structures Funded by the AHRC under its Innovation Awards Scheme
Automatic metadata generation for resource discovery Joint research project with the AHDS, funded by JISC
EASTER Evaluating automated subject tools for enhancing retrieval Consultancy on a JISC funded project hosted at UKOLN

Peer reviewing
Peer reviewer for Journal of the American Society of Information Science and Technology, Journal of documentation, Knowledge organization
