INSTG047: Publishing Skills I
This module aims to provide students with a detailed working knowledge of the commissioning process, from the original idea to the publication of final high quality, market ready product. The emphasis is on books, with extensive reference to electronic products. Topics include: the origin of publishing ideas; working with authors; developing outlines; using literary advice; negotiating contracts; scheduling; print runs and prices; good editorial practice; list maintenance and results monitoring. The second part of the module concentrates on sales and marketing.
Assessment: Assessment by coursework only.
Compulsory for: MA in Publishing
Optional for: This module will be available for short course students.
Prerequisites: There are no formal prerequisites for this module, although some familiarity with general publishing functions is assumed.
