HIV/AIDS
cause a number of nutritional problems in children and increase the
mortality rates and reduce the growth rates of severely malnourished
children. The mechanisms and the best form of management are not
established.
What we are doing
In association with the Department of Paediatrics in the Lusaka University Teaching Hospital, Zambia we are doing clinical studies on the immunology and clinical response to nutritional rehabilitation in HIV infected and uninfected children.
In association with Action Against Hunger in Malawi we are assessing the outcome of the management of severe malnutrition in nutrition centres and at home among HIV infected and HIV uninfected children to assess the best form of treatment, including assessment of when to start anti-retroviral therapy.
