Spotlight: Dr Anne Peasey

18 October 2018

This month IEHC talks to Dr Anne Peasey, IEHC Director of Education, Institute Graduate Tutor (Taught) and Director of the MSc Health and Society: Social Epidemiology programme What is your role and what does it involve? My main two roles are IEHC Director of Education / Institute Graduate Tutor, and Director of the MSc programme Health and Society: Social Epidemiology (HSSE).

Anne Peasey - Director of Education, Institute of Epidemiology and Health Care

As Director of Education, I have an overview of the long term education strategy for the Institute.  I lead on expanding and improving the educational provision for UG, PGT and PGR students, also on supporting, encouraging and promoting the involvement of all staff in education.  I work closely with the Institute Graduate Tutor for research (Prof Annie Britton, EPH), the Institute Undergraduate Tutor (Prof Joe Rosenthal, PCPH), and Institute Education Administration and Communications  Lead (Mr Andreas Opitz).

My second role, as Director of the MSc HSSE is equally satisfying.  Helping MSc students to develop their skills, knowledge and confidence over the course of the MSc programme, whether through lecturing, small group sessions or providing feedback. Supervising MSc dissertations or personal tutoring is immensely rewarding.

How long have you been at UCL and what was your previous role?

I have been at UCL since 2003, when I joined the Central Eastern European Health Research group in EPH. Before coming to UCL, I was a researcher at LSTHM but spent the majority of my time at the National Institute of Medical Sciences and Nutrition in Mexico City investigating the health risks associated with wastewater reuse in agriculture.

What working achievement or initiative are you most proud of?

I was proud to be part of the June IEHC education meeting which demonstrated the enormous commitment of staff to education, and I am proud to be part of the team organising the new IEHC Education Forum (thank you to Shirley Cupit and Stephen Jivraj).

Tell us about a project you are working on now which is top of your to-do list?

The next challenge is to improve both the student experience and the support for staff interested in expanding their teaching portfolio.

What is your favourite band?

Runrig

Who would be your dream dinner guest?

Runrig although I might need a larger dinner table!

What is your favourite place?

Any hill or mountain where you can sit and watch as the weather changes before your eyes.
