Aims

To provide an introduction to managing your references and creating bibliographies using Endnote

You will be able to:

• manually input references into a database
• import references from Pubmed and other bibliographic databases
• generate a bibliography in a variety of output styles
• use Endnote within Microsoft Word to insert citations and create a bibliography as you write

Who should attend?

Any member of staff who regularly needs to keep track of references or citations, e.g. for a research project or systematic review

• use Reference Manager within Microsoft Word to insert citations and create a bibliography as you write

Aims

To have the knowledge and the ability to carry out searches on a variety of resources, including the Ovid interface to databases such as Medline, Embase, PsycInfo as well as other databases including the Web of Science, Scopus and the Cochrane library

You will be able to:

• Translate a research query into an effective search strategy
• use thesaurus and text word searching
• combine searches using AND, OR and NOT
• Search a range of databases

Who should attend?

Members of UCL/ICH staff or postgraduate students who want to learn or update their knowledge of literature searching. Members of GOSH staff with an honorary contract with UCL and a UCL computing username and password

Aims

To become familiar with Search 2.0, the search interface to the NHS literature databases, in order to search the NHS National Core Content databases effectively and find articles and evidence to help answer your clinical and health management questions.

You will be able to:

• Differentiate between the databases available to you via the NHS (Medline, Embase, Cinahl, BNI, AMED, PsycInfo, DH-Data)
• Run an effective literature search independently
• Understand what MeSH and subject headings are and why they are used
• Download full text articles
• Save your search or create an alert
• Print, save and email your results

Who Should Attend?

• Members of staff from any discipline who would like support in searching within the NHS National Core Content.
• NHS Athens password holders who want to know how the new search interface works

Aims

To have the ability to carry out a literature search on PubMed effectively and find articles and evidence to help answer your clinical questions

You will be able to:

• Run an effective literature search independently
• Understand what MeSH terms are and why they are used
• Understand the importance of the 'Details' link
• Filter out evidence based literature
• Print, save and email your references
• Save your search
• Take advantage of all features of the PubMed site

Who should attend?

Members of staff from any discipline who want to learn or update their knowledge of literature searching on PubMed

Aims

To have the knowledge and the ability to carry out searches on a variety of evidence-based resources, including The Cochrane Library, in order to find evidence to support your clinical practice and answer your clinical questions.

You will be able to:

• Understand the steps involved in evidence-based practice
• Understand what type of information is 'evidence-based'
• Differentiate between the various evidence-based resources available
• Carry out effective searches for information on a variety of resources including Clinical Evidence, The Cochrane Library and PubMed Clinical Queries

Who should attend?

Members of clinical staff from any discipline who want to learn more about finding information to support evidence-based practice or who would like a refresher in using evidence-based resources.

Aim:

To familiarise yourself with the Institute of Child Health Library and its services

You will be able to:

• Search the online catalogue and locate books and journals in the Library

• Locate and use the ICH Library webpage and the UCL electronic journals pages
  

• Learn to order Inter-Library Loans and make Store requests via the online catalogue

• Find out about out-of-hours access to the Library

• Find out about the training courses provided by the Library on literature searching and reference management systems

• Find out information about NHS Athens login for GOSH staff and Shibboleth login and offsite access to electronic resources for ICH staff and students
  

• Have the opportunity to ask a member of the staff all you need to know about the Library

 Who should attend:

Any member of  GOSH and ICH who wishes to find out information on the ICH Library Services

Aims:

to provide training to ICH research staff and  GOSH staff with a UCL honorary contract on the use of the UCL  Research Publication Service (RPS).

You will be able to:

• Use RPS publication data for REF 2014 (Research Excellence Framework 2014).

• Edit your default search settings, i.e. adding a name variant, institutional address, publication date and so on to initiate your search

• Harvest your publication data from on-line sources such as PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science.

• Approve or decline selected publications.

• Input publication data manually.

• Input publication data using Endnote.

• Manually join records together or split records joined by the system.

• Upload pdf files of your publications to RPS’ transfer window.

Who should attend:

All ICH staff with a research profile or GOSH research staff with a UCL honorary contract.

The Institute of Child Health Library provides support to staff of the Institute on matters regarding the Research Publication Service (RPS) in view of the Research Excellence Framework (REF) of 2014. The Research Publications Service is the repository for UCL's research publications output. There is also the ability to upload the full text of the publication to UCL E-prints.
