Electrospray Quadrupole- Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry (ESI-QTOF)

The Centre has the ability to perform metabolomic comparative studies of complex solutions (plasma, urine etc.) to detect changes in metabolite concentrations using an ESI QTOF MS coupled to a HPLC (Waters 2795 XE).  All data is analysed and compared using MarkerLynx processing software.

Gas Chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS)

There are three Hewlett Packard / Agilent GC-MS mass spectrometers situated within the unit. GC-MS is typically used to quantitate and identify primarily non-polar metabolites, sugars, fatty acids, drugs of abuse, steroids, cholesterol metabolites etc which are less than 1 kDa in mass.

High Performance Liquid Chromatography electrospray tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-ESI-MS/MS)

The unit has a QuattroMicro triple quadrupole mass spectrometer coupled to a Waters 2795 XE HPLC instrument. HPLC-MS/MS is used for the identification and quantitation of polar metabolites less than 2 kDa. It is a particularly powerful technique as it can be used to selectively measure specific metabolites in mixtures without the need for any work-up or separation.
