Population, Policy and Practice

We are a multi-disciplinary group of researchers with an international reputation for population-level and clinical research that influences public health policy and practice.

Our aim is to promote the health of children and young people and the adults they will become through conducting research:

  • across the life course
  • on common, chronic and complex conditions, in addition to rare disorders
  • on defining and measuring what matters for children, young people and their families
  • recognising the wider contexts of children's lives

Viral Infections in Pregnancy and Childhood

Dr Claire Thorne leads a research programme that addresses prevention, treatment and care of viral infections in pregnancy and childhood, including HIV, hepatitis B and hepatitis C.

Cohort studies form an important component of the research, including the European Collaborative Study on HIV-positive pregnant women and their infants, a large cohort of children living with HIV in Ukraine, and a European study investigating co-infection with hepatitis C and HIV in childhood. These cohorts are supported within an EU-funded Network of Excellence on clinical and epidemiological HIV research called EuroCoord.

UK-based projects include a national audit of practice regarding management of hepatitis B in pregnancy, commissioned by the UK National Screening Committee.
