About The MARCH Trial
MARCH stands for:
Minimal
Access
Repair of
Contralateral
Hernias
The trial is an international collaboration designed to answer the question:
In infants less than 1 year old with unilateral inguinal hernia,
does laparoscopic repair with closure of contralateral patent processus vaginalis if present,
prevent development of contralateral inguinal hernia?
MARCH is a prospective randomised controlled trial with 8 participating centres in 3 countries (UK, Austria and Italy). The lead centre is the Institute of Child Health and Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, London, UK.
With parental consent, 360 infants with unilateral inguinal hernia will be randomised to receive either open or laparoscopic repair. The infants will be monitored for the development of contralateral inguinal hernia for 3 years after surgery.
Several secondary outcome measures will also be compared between the two treatments. (See MARCH Trial Protocol for full details.)
