Welcome to the Portex website for health and research professionals
The multi-disciplinary research teams within this theme investigate the causes, consequences and treatments of cardiorespiratory diseases in childhood. This work is of immense clinical importance because cardiorespiratory disease - the major cause of death in Western society - has its origins in childhood; and respiratory illness is the most common cause of paediatric admission to hospital.
Portex Mission Statement
The unit carries out a programme of integrated clinical and research activities. It aims to:
Minimise pain, discomfort and stress for children requiring surgery and intensive therapy and improve safety, outcome and patient satisfaction nationally by:
- Evaluating new drugs, equipment and techniques of anaesthesia, pain management and intensive care for children
- Investigating the scientific basis of pain
- Assessing the severity of critical illness in childhood
Promote lung health in children by:
- Studying growth and development of the respiratory system in health and disease
- Assessing the nature and severity of lung disease in childhood
- Evaluating the effectiveness of treatments for common and rare respiratory conditions
In view of the size of the unit a number of functional groups have been formed, each covering specific areas of interest. They are designed to be informal and flexible, and to encourage better communications between members of the unit with similar research interest
