2004-2005: The role of plastic reorganisation of the ipsilateral corticospinal tract from the undamaged hemisphere in the development of motor skills following unilateral cerebral infarction in early childhood.  Research question: Whether the potential for reorganisation of the unaffected hemispere following stroke is greater following lesions in early childhood than in later life.  (04-NR-20)

2004-2006: Towards the establishment of standards of practice and the initiation of multi-centre clinical trials for neonates and children with stroke.  Research question: The overall objective of this multi-centre study is to develop and conduct clinical trials in childhood stroke.  Our specific aims within this pilot study are; 1) To establish a collaborative network of physicians and scientists with expertise in the field of childhood stroke and cerebrovascular disease to conduct clinical research studies; 2) to ascertain the numbers of newborns and children with ischaemic stroke, their stroke sub-types, and their current treatments within our 10 centers internationally over a 12 month period; 3) to develop an appropriate web-based database (which will be based at The Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto), and to utilise these data in the design of future multi-centre studies in childhood stroke. (03-NR-14)

2004-2007: Cerebral hypoperfusion consequences in children with cerebrovascular disease: identifying potential targets for intervention.  Research question: Are any of the functional consequences of childhood stroke or cerebrovascular disease secondary to potentially reversible cerebral hypoperfusion? 2004-2009:Identification and characterisation of molecular genetic alterations in paediatric astrocytoma, medulloblastoma and ependymoma using a combination of gene expression analysis and genomic analysis.
