Adverse Paediatric Outcomes of Antibiotic Treatment in Pregnancy

Supervisors: Ruth Gilbert, Irene Petersen

In my PhD, I am using UK primary care data to explore, whether fetal exposure to antibiotics may lead to adverse neurological outcomes (cerebral palsy, epilepsy) in childhood. My PhD addresses the following questions:

  • What is the incidence of prenatal antibiotic treatment for different indications and gestations of pregnancy and how have these changed over time?
  • Is antibiotic prescribing during pregnancy associated with an increased risk of neurological outcomes in the child, after taking into account the occurrence of maternal infection?
  • Is the effect of antibiotic treatment modified by timing before delivery?
