Visitors to the Cardiac Unit
Information for visitors wishing to spend time in the Unit
The Cardiac Unit is based in Great Ormond Street Hospital and is divided into a number of themes: Vascular Physiology; Structural Heart Disease; Heart/Muscle Disease (including Transplant and Cardiomyopathy); Anatomy/Biology; Imaging (including MRI); Pulmonary Hypertension; Outcomes Research and Paediatric Intensive Care, Tracheal/Surgery and ECHO.
Great Ormond Street is a postgraduate teaching hospital and not a formal undergraduate training Institution. For this reason, formal graded assessments are not undertaken and the supervising Consultant will not be able to grade the performance of any visitor at the end of their placement. We can however provide a certificate of attendance. Please note: We only arrange cardiac-related requests and, during the time of the visit, you will not be able to observe in other departments.
We welcome visitors to take part in all our teaching activities, including ward rounds, case presentation conferences and clinical lectures. You will also be able to observe a wide variety of procedures in cardiothoracic surgery and/or cardiology.
The Unit is able to accept requests from:
- Medical students (at least in 4th year of studies)
- Junior doctors
- Consultants
- Foundation Year 2 trainees
- Senior Fellows (including the Visiting Fellowship Programme for overseas doctors)
- Observers with a non medical background (only with legitimate qualifications)
Only those visitors who are GMC registered are able to have patient contact. All other visitors are considered observers.
What is the Next Step?
All visitor applications are arranged in conjunction with the PGME (Post graduate Medical Education) Department. For visits lasting more than four weeks, the PGME must issue a mandatory CRB check which may take up to three months to process. Early application is essential to avoid disappointment.
Please click on the following PGME website link for more information regarding visitors and fees. http://www.ich.ucl.ac.uk/education/gosh/visit_doc_med_students.html
If wish to visit the Cardiac Unit after reading the information provided by the PGME, please email cardiacresearch(@)gosh.nhs.uk enclosing a copy of your CV and state which theme you wish to visit. You will then be sent the relevant documents.
