Part of the Otto Wolff Lecture series 2013

Abstract

The lecture will highlight changes which have occurred during a career extending from 1970 to 2004. Prenatal diagnosis which was virtually non-existent is now well developed with fetal surgery coming of age. Ultrasound, CT, MRI, PET scans were unheard of while radiological intervention has now taken over a large number of surgical procedures. Anaesthesia and ITU have made surgery safer and pain management is now an important aspect of postop. care. Emergency surgery was considered mandatory for conditions such as congenital diaphragmatic hernia, oesophageal atresia and myelomeningocoele whereas nowadays very few conditions require emergency intervention. The outcome for children with malignant tumours has improved dramatically with accurate imaging and preoperative chemo-and radiotherapy. Minimal invasive surgery is now standard for many conditions, resulting in improved cosmesis and more rapid recovery.
