Rio Tinto sponsorship of Terracotta Army project

We are very happy to announce that IAMS has signed a new sponsorship agreement with Rio Tinto, to support ongoing research and knowledge exchange efforts between UK-based and Chinese scholars working at the First Emperor’s Mausoleum in Xi’an, China. The project Imperial Logistics: The Making of the Terracotta Army is a co-operative partnership that is investigating the crafting methods and logistical organisation behind the making of the vast Terracotta Army which guarded the mausoleum of China’s first emperor, Qin Shihuang (259-210 BC).

Professor Izumi Shimada's visit to IAMS

Professor Izumi Shimada recently delivered the IAMS Beno Rothenberg Memorial Lecture to a full lecture theatre at the UCL Institute of Archaeology. The lecture, entitled “Obsessed with Metal: Manufacture, Use and Significance of metal in the thousand year-old Sicán Culture of South America”, presented a captivating synopsis of four decades of work by the Sican Archaeological Project.
