Following the Evening Conference on Safer, more resilient communities through safe and resilient schools: international case studies, this one-day masterclass will introduce delegates to:

  • A series of tools (e.g., rapid visual survey forms, mobile apps) for a rapid yet reliable multi-hazard taxonomy development and vulnerability prioritization of school infrastructure (Lecture 1 and exercise 1);
  • Methodologies for rapid post-disaster damage assessment and tagging of school buildings against potentially destructive natural hazards, i.e. earthquake, typhoon, and flood (Lecture 2);
  • Example on how to enhance multi-hazard resilience of schools through retrofitting of school buildings and disaster risk reduction education (Lecture 3);
  • Example on how to manage post-disaster emergency, e.g., assess the suitability of school building as initial evacuation shelter and temporary accommodation (Lecture 4 and exercise 2).
