The UCL Leadership Programme
We are in the process of reviewing our in-house learning offer on Leadership and Management Development with a view to putting in place an enhanced offer during the course of the 2012/13 academic year. We aim to ensure that this will provide an integrated and progressive framework to support UCL people to develop the leadership and management skills they need at each stage of their career. In the meantime, our existing leadership and management modules which have received positive feedback from learners will continue to be available to be taken on a stand alone basis or in combination according to individual need.
Please note that all sessions are free to UCL staff and are likely to book up quickly. Should any places remain within a fortnight of the start of the course, these will be offered to members of other higher education institutions.
Programme Modules
Leading Change in Higher Education (1 day)
This module will focus on applying change theories within your group, team, department or faculty. If the management of change is about processes that keep the system running smoothly, then leadership is about defining the future and helping to align people with that future. In universities, the leadership of change is not solely in the domain of senior management, but extends to many levels within the organisation. This day long session will give you confidence to lead change by:
- establishing a vision through involvement and real consultation
- empowering others to act
- planning for short and long-term success
- applying some theories of change management and leadership
Please see Leading Change in Higher Education for more information
Power and Influence (1 day)
During this half day session you will be invited to critique issues of power and influence within the higher education context. The session will explore personal power and circles of influence and control and how to use these to negotiate effectively at both strategic and operational levels. The session will explore:
- theories of organisational behaviour
- the dynamics of power and influence within the higher education sector
- what constraints and freedoms we have as leaders and managers within our institutional context.
Please see Power and Influence for more information
Strategic Financial Planning and Budgeting (1/2 day)
This half day module will look at the current and longer term (over the next 5 years) UCL financial position and will consider what we can do to influence the longer term outcome. (Please note: detailed budgeting and forecasting will not be covered in this workshop)
Please see Strategic Financial Planning and Budgeting for more information
