Participants: This one-day workshop is suitable for all UCL researchers with people management and / or supervision responsibilities.

Overview: This highly interactive workshop has been tailor-made specifically for research staff at UCL with people management and / or supervision responsibility – who are in the best position to ensure the creation of excellent research outcomes at UCL and beyond. It will be a skills and confidence building workshop, which will explore some of the key behaviours and skills required to inspire, engage and empower individual researchers and research teams.

Aim: To explore what is required in terms of behaviours and practice, from researchers with people management and / or supervision responsibility.

Workshop Objectives:
By the end of the workshop, delegates will be able to:

  • describe their leadership and line management role in terms of ensuring the creation of excellent research, including during times of change, and what this looks like in practice
  • describe the behaviours required to get the best out individual researchers and / or research teams on an ongoing basis, through informal management, coaching and feedback
  • describe and demonstrate how to encourage ongoing learning, how to be inclusive, how to motivate and how to delegate effectively
  • describe and demonstrate how to be flexible and adapt to different people management styles to suite different situations
  • describe and demonstrate the skills and behaviours required to carry out meaningful face-to-face performance conversations using an open, honest, empowering, sensitive, respectful and if need be, an assertive approach
