Guidelines On Equivalent Status

Procedure

Honorary Professor of UCL

This title is reserved for individuals who are closely linked to one of UCL’s academic departments (or Institutes), and who are from an academic/research institution.

The appointee should be of an academic standing equivalent to that of Professor at UCL.

Following review of the candidate’s credentials by an ad-hoc group of experts selected by the Dean, the recommendation & CV should be sent to the HR Division with Form Hon1 or Hon2 (for depts. within Faculty of Clinical Sciences).

The appointment will then be made by the Provost.

Visiting Professor

This title may be conferred upon distinguished individuals from either related fields of activity (eg the professions or industry) or academic/research institutions.

The appointee should be of an equivalent academic standing to that of Professor at UCL.

Request to appoint should be sent to the HR Division on a Form Hon1 or Hon2 (for depts. within Faculty of Clinical Sciences), with CV and recommendation from the relevant Head of Department / Institute.

The appointment will then be made by the Provost.

Honorary Reader

of UCL

The title is reserved for individuals who are closely linked to one or more of UCL’s academic departments (or Institutes), and who are from an academic/research institution.

The appointee should be of an academic standing equivalent to that of Reader at UCL.

Following review of the candidate’s credentials by an ad-hoc group of experts selected by the Dean, the recommendation & CV should be sent to the HR Division with Form Hon1 or Hon2 (for depts. within Faculty of Clinical Sciences).

The appointment will then be made by the Provost.

Honorary Senior Lecturer

Title awarded to individuals who are equivalent to Senior Lecturer/Reader level, and who undertake teaching/lecturing.

Request to appoint should be sent to the HR Division on a Form Hon1 or Hon2 (for depts. within Faculty of Clinical Sciences) with a copy of the CV.

The appointment will then be made by the Human Resources Division.

Honorary Lecturer

Title awarded to individuals who are equivalent to Lecturer level and who undertake teaching/lecturing.

As above.

Honorary Clinical Teacher

The only title which now includes the word ‘Clinical’, usually requested by the Clinical Sciences Faculty.

As above.

Honorary Senior Research Fellow

Awarded to individuals equivalent to Lecturer B grade and above. Individuals would primarily be involved in research/collaborative projects rather than teaching.

As above.

Honorary Research Fellow

As for Honorary Senior Research Fellow but awarded to less experienced individuals.

As above.

Honorary Research Assistant

Awarded to individuals equivalent to Lecturer A grade. Individuals would be involved in research/collaborative projects.
