Clinical Staff Guidance - Non-consultant staff

The categories and titles of a number of the clinical non-consultant staff have been rationalised from 1 August 2007 to facilitate a more consistent application across the Faculty and have a closer alignment with other academic and research staff at UCL. The following clinical grade scheme must be applied to vacant positions, except Dentists, advertised with effect from 1 May 2008.

1. Clinical Lecturers

This designation will be restricted to staff who are required to be medically qualified to carry out teaching and research and are not undergoing Specialty Registrar training.

2. Clinical Research Associate

This designation will only be used for clinical research staff who do not hold a named research fellowship.

3. Clinical Research Fellow

This designation will only be used for holders of externally funded research fellowships awarded by the MRC, CR UK etc.

4. Clinician Scientists

This designation is used for staff that are medically qualified with a PhD or MD in a basic science or a clinical/health related subject and are undergoing clinical consultant training

This designation will be used for staff who are required to be qualified dentists to carry out their job but have no requirement to carry out research.

7. Clinical Training Fellows

This designation will only be used for those completing their Specialty Registrar training and carrying out research.
They must have been allocated a national training number.

Paid on the Specialty Registrar scale.

Please note staff appointed to Specialty Registrar positions advertised by the London Deanery will have the appointment title "Clinical Training Fellow – NIHR Clinical Lecturer". They will be appointed on the above terms and conditions.
