HIST6201: Europe in the Early Middle Ages, 400-1000

This course is designed to
survey the principal developments of the history of Europe in the early middle
ages, with particular reference to issues of concern to historians over the
past 10-15 years. The course begins with an outline historical survey to enable
studenst to identify the major settings, people and places (fall of the Roman
Empire, rise of Islam, Carolingian and Ottonian Empires etc.) and then proceeds
thematically, dealing with developments in a series of subject areas (e.g.
states, religious experience, towns and trade, legal structures and dispute
settlement) over the entire period.
HIST6201: 2 X 2,500 word essays and a 3-hour examination
HIST6201A (Term 1 Affiliate students only): 2 X 2,500 word essays OR 1 X 5,000 word essay
HIST6201B (Term 2 Affiliate students only): 2 X 2,500 word essays
