My interests centre on British military history, especially since the late-nineteenth century. I have just finished co-editing, with Dr. Huw Bennett of the University of Aberystwyth, an edition of the Kenya papers of General Sir George Erskine. It will be published by the Army Records Society in the autumn of 2013. I am currently preparing a book analysing the British counter-insurgency campaign in Cyprus in the second half of the 1950s, Britain, Cyprus and EOKA, 1955-59.

Among my recent publications are:

‘The British Army and the Empire, 1856-1956’, in G. Kennedy (ed.), Imperial Defence. The Old World Order 1856-1956 (Abingdon: Routledge, 2008), 91-110.

The British Way in Counter-Insurgency 1945-1967 (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2011)

-short-listed for the British Army Book of the Year Award, 2012.

Army, Empire and Cold War. The British Army and Military Policy 1945-1971(Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2011)

-runner-up for the Templer Medal of the Society for Army Historical Research 2013

‘Nasty not nice: British counter-insurgency doctrine and practice, 1945-1967’, Small Wars and Insurgencies, vol. 23, numbers 4-5 (2012), 744-61.

‘Duncan Sandys and the Projection of British Power after Suez’, Diplomacy & Statecraft, vol. 24, no. 1 (2013), 41-58.
