'Revisiting 1960s British Cinema-going' takes Wakefield back to the 60s

9 August 2017

Students at Wakefield Theatre Royal

Students from UCL Drama Society joined Professor Melvyn Stokes and Dr Patrick Glen at Wakefield's Theatre Royal on July 19 to host an immersive showing of Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush, transforming the theatre into a cinema from 1967, the year of the film's release. With students playing roles including the cinema manager, usherettes, and several rowdy audience members, the local public was able to experience what it was like to attend the British cinema in the 1960s. One of the students who participated in the Wakefield event, Matthew Turbett, wrote an account of his experience which can be found on the UCL History blog.

This event was part of Professor Stokes' AHRC-funded project, Remembering 1960s British Cinema-going, which is designed to disseminate the research conducted under a previous AHRC grant. Information on future events, many of which have been scheduled in collaboration with branches of the University of the Third Age, is available on the project's website.
