Do you remember Cumberland Lodge?
The Campaign for Cumberland Lodge began in Autumn 2013 to support the department's annual residential trip to Cumberland Lodge, which has been a tradition at UCL History for more than 50 years. We have prided ourselves on creating a great learning experience that is challenging – but also friendly and accessible and that’s why the Cumberland Lodge visit is so important. It provides an intensive programme of workshops, lectures and other learning activities as well as ice-breakers and social events. The aim is to facilitate group working and friendship amongst the new students as well as to introduce them to the department and to provide the opportunity to get to know staff in a more informal environment.
We want to keep this great tradition alive and the department has always subsidised the trip for those who would otherwise be unable to afford to attend. Due to the high tuition fees as well as the ever-increasing cost of living in London, more and more students need the department's support.
We would love to hear your memories of Cumberland Lodge! Tweet them to @UCLHistory, or write on our Facebook page.
"I went to Cumberland Lodge in October 1966 for the "country house weekend" for new History Department entrants. It was great fun, our time spent partly getting to know each other, partly exploring the grounds, partly drinking in the bar, and partly having deep discussions about the meaning of history. The discussion sessions were in fact very useful as ice-breakers, and enabled one to spot the potential swots and good-timers! A very worthwhile exercise which the department ought to keep up..."
"Spending a weekend in a lovely place in Windsor Great Park surrounded by both established and aspiring historians is a one-of-a-kind experience that I would love to repeat!"
Agata Zielinska (2nd year BA History student)
"Cumberland Lodge - The name stirs many happy memories which have lasted over 47 years. Friendships were formed which lasted for the next three years...and to the present day when they were revived in recent years following our reunions in 2006, 2009 and 2013. Cumberland Lodge brings memories of walking in the Great Park, lively discussions and going in Jim's Triumph Vitesse to the pub."
