The Centre is one of the world's premier institutes devoted to scholarly research into the history of medicine. It is commited to promoting a vision of medical history which is comprehensive in chronological, geographical and thematic range, and which draws upon a wide field of scholarly expertise. The fields covered range from the ancient Greek and Islamic medicine through Renaissance and early modern medicine, down to medical science in the twentieth century and beyond. Research into these areas of medical history is anchored in the activities of the core members of the staff in the Centre; but staff also direct the work of a large number of pre-doctoral and post-doctoral scholars who research into many different aspects of medical history.

Centre research is directed towards three major wide-ranging areas: Early Medicine; Asian Medicine; and Recent and Modern Medicine. For more information on the staff and projects in these areas, please click on the appropriate links on the side menu.
