DR BENJAMIN GARDNER SOOD (aka Gardner)

BIOGRAPHICAL DETAILS
Ben's undergraduate and postgraduate studies were all undertaken at University of Sussex under the supervision
of Professor Charles Abraham. After obtaining a first class BA (Hons) in Social Psychology in 2003, Ben was
awarded a studentship by the Economic and Social Research Council for a transport psychology project exploring
determinants of decisions to drive in the presence of non-car alternative transport. Ben completed an MRes
in Psychological Methods (with distinction) in 2004, and a DPhil in Social Psychology in 2008.
Ben's first postdoctoral position was in the Centre for Outcomes Research and Effectiveness (2008-09),
working as a Research Associate with Professor Susan Michie on various projects which have sought to
understand and strengthen the extent to which healthcare research, policy and practice is based on theory
and evidence.
Ben joined the Health Behaviour Research Centre in January 2009.

RESEARCH
Research interests
My research focuses on three main areas of interest:
- Applying psychological theories of behaviour and behaviour change to health promotion, and the development of methods to assist in doing so
- The role of habit and automaticity in action
- Understanding modifiable determinants of travel mode choice
