DR REBECCA BEEKEN Research Psychologist EXPERTISE Health psychology; Obesity and cancer; Weight control in adults; Health-related quality of life; Research design & trial management RESEARCH Rebecca's research to date has focused on two areas within health psychology, obesity and cancer, alongside developing expertise in trial methodology. Rebecca joined the Health Behaviour Research Centre in October 2009 to provide general research assistance to Professor Jane Wardle, focusing primarily on early detection of cancer. She developed an interest in Professor Wardle's programme of work on obesity, particularly in the obesity and cancer link, and took on management of an NPRI-funded randomised controlled trial (RCT) of obesity in primary care (10TT Trial). In addition, she is now working on a pilot trial of a weight management programme for overweight and obese persons with learning disabilities funded by the NIHR, a CR-UK study exploring the impact of weight loss on colorectal cancer risk, and a trial of an exercise intervention in multiple myeloma patients. Previous research Before joining the HBRC in 2009, Rebecca completed her PhD at the University of Sheffield. She was awarded an ESRC 1+3 studentship to explore the variables that impact health-related quality of life in cancer patients who have undergone haematopoietic stem cell transplants. Since joining the HBRC, Rebecca has also spent a year on secondment to the Medical Research Council, where she was a Research Design Service Advisor and Clinical Trials Unit Co-ordinator, alongside setting up the RCT of obesity in primary care.
