Rosalina Babourkova-Horner (Development Planning Unit): Gender and Environmental Perceptions in a Roma Community
This research explores perceptions of environmental risks and well-being in a Roma neighbourhood in the city of Sofia, Bulgaria. Using participatory photography methods, the study, funded by the UCL Chadwick Trust, found a marked gender difference in the way participants ranked the significance of the identified environmental risks in the neighbourhood. Gender differences were also obvious in the way women and men perceived the interrelationship between risks and the spatial extent of the risks, with women concerned with risks over the wider community and men concerned with problems existent only in their immediate locality.
