RESOURCES
There are many ways to be involved in activities related to the environment at UCL. Take a look at our What's Happening section for news, events and programmes, and see resources below.

Waste and Recycling at UCL
The majority of UCL’s recyclable material is collected using a co-mingled system (ie one in which the different recyclable components are collected in the same bag) which is managed by UCL’s Soft Services contractor, Office & General Environmental (O&G). The bags of recyclable material are taken to a materials recovery facility (MRF) operated by Bywaters, O&G’s waste management partner, where the bags of recyclable material are separated from the bags of non-recyclable wastes. The recyclable materials are then processed by the MRF where they are segregated into material streams which are then sold on the open market. Non-recyclable wastes and materials which are rejected by the MRF are taken to a local energy from waste (EFW) plant where they are incinerated and energy is recovered from the process. A video of the MRF in action is available online.
Laboratories
S-Labs have developed an Environmental Good Practice Guide for Laboratories
CEDREC Environmental Legislation Database
UCL has access to an external database of environmental legislation, CEDREC. This can help to ensure that you, and your department, are up-to-date with changing legislation for your area.
To access the database, email greenucl [at] ucl.ac.uk.
Guidance notes for using the database are also available.
Green Travel Resources
UCL has developed a Travel Plan to take into account the needs of staff and students. Where possible, staff and students are encouraged to walk as part of a healthy lifestyle. Direction maps are available to download and the UCL iMap application is available to install on iPhones and related products.
UCL has a Cycle Scheme to assist staff in purchasing a bike (an allowance may also be available if they use their bike for business travel). There is useful information available regarding the safety and security of your bicycle and yourself. Cycle parking (pdf) and shower facilities (pdf) are available.
UCL is readily accessible via public transport and season ticket loans are available to members of staff. The use of Videoconferencing facilities can help minimise the requirement for long-distance travel.
A CO2 emissions calculator can be used to compare the emissions arising from the use of various modes of transport which is available on the Transport Direct website.
Information on the Transport for London Cycle Hire Scheme is available from
http://www.tfl.gov.uk/roadusers/cycling/14808.aspx
For information on active travel to/from UCL, see WalkRunCycle (external site).
