UCL is proud to say that all of ISD’s laptops, desktops and monitors are EPEAT Gold rated.

EPEAT Is The Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool, which scores products on an array of sustainability criteria, from energy efficiency and how easily they can be upgraded and reused, to using non-hazardous materials in parts and recycled packaging for delivery.

Earlier this month, I attended the Environmental Association of Universities and Colleges (EAUC) conference at Lancaster University.  The conference offers the opportunity for UK higher education institutes (HEIs) to share best practice and discuss the emerging challenges. 

UCL wins 'Outstanding Contribution to Environmental Sustainability' award

Last month UCL was nominated for two awards at the Camden Business Sustainability Awards 2017- the ‘Excellence in Energy Efficiency and Carbon Reduction’ award for our Logistics Zone and the ‘Leadership in Green Procurement’ award for our sustainable procurement work in our SKA HE programme. We are extremely pleased to announce that UCL received the overall award of the night: the ‘Outstanding Contribution to Environmental Sustainability’ award.

The new School of Pharmacy (SOP) Medicinal Garden was created on Tuesday 4th April.  Volunteers from the Institute of Child Health and the Institute of Education joined forces with the School of Pharmacy's library team to lay the first plants in a bed in Brunswick Square.

Meet UCL's first Sustainability Procurement Officer- Alex Jones

We are pleased to announce that we have a new member of the team, Alex Jones, who will be UCL’s first Sustainable Procurement Officer. Alex has a background in sustainability at Local Authorities and will be helping make procurement and purchasing of goods and services more sustainable across UCL.

As you can imagine, UCL purchases a lot of things, ranging from the ordinary (stationary and office equipment) to the extraordinary (3D printers and antibodies). Whatever the purchase, it should be a ‘responsible’ procurement.

The UCL Conservation Group joined forces with the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) and the UCL and University of London Estates teams to undertake a wildlife survey around the green spaces on campus.

Congratulations to two UCL student start-ups for making it to the finals of the 2017 Mayor’s Entrepreneur Competition.

UCL student start-ups Captum Technology and Stripped packaging-free-pasta made it to the finals of the Mayor’s Entrepreneur competition 2017 after a ‘Dragon’s Den’ style pitching event at City Hall. The competition challenged students from London Universities to come up with creative solutions to the urgent environmental and social challenges facing London. With a £20,000 cash prize and mentoring from Citi Foundation, there were more than 300 entries from 37 institutions. UCL’s Sustainability team and Innovation and Enterprise team are both proud and impressed with Captum and Stripped packaging-free-pasta for their pioneering proposals.
