UCL has expressed support for Transport for London's proposed North-South and East-West Cycle Superhighways.

UCL joins over 100 major London businesses, charities and universities that have already voiced support for the scheme. Following a request for comments on the proposal from the UCL community, the university has written to Transport for London to express its support. The response states:

"Given the size and spread of the estate, safe and efficient transport is critical to support UCL’s core activities – to enable commuting for work and study, to facilitate collaboration between UCL’s departments and its partners and to promote our work within the wider community. In this regard, the UCL community benefits from the multitude of efficient, safe and cheap transport options available in London.

UCL believes that the proposals for the cycle superhighways represent a positive and much-needed step forward in providing safe routes for cyclists. As such, UCL fully supports the two proposals which have been set out for consultation

UCL recognises the benefits of cycling – as a cheap and effective alternative to other modes of travel. Not only is cycling considered to be important for the health and wellbeing of the UCL community, it is an important part of maintaining business continuity and resilience (by offering alternative options for getting to work for staff and students).

The Mayor and Transport for London’s (TfL) plans for the North-South and East-West cycle superhighways are essential in providing suitable cycling routes for all, not just the fit and the brave. That this will be done largely by taking space from the carriageway represents a substantial and welcome commitment to London’s sustainability. Indeed, UCL expects that the proposed scheme will support its own objectives to increase the number of cyclists travelling to and from the Institution by bike.

Overall, UCL believes that the proposals for the cycle superhighways represent a positive and much-needed step forward in providing safe routes for cyclists. As such, UCL fully supports the two proposals which have been set out for consultation."
