UCLIC launches hunt to find technological solutions to green challenges

12 June 2015

UCLIC Green Technology Competition

With support from the UCL Sustainability Team, the UCL Interaction Centre (UCLIC) is looking for students to develop innovative uses for technology to help make the university more sustainable. The competition has a £500 prize and the winning entry may be implemented across UCL.

How you approach this challenge is up to you. You could develop a new stand-alone web tool to increase engagement with sustainability at UCL. Or you could develop a plug-in for UCL’s website to encourage better reporting of energy or water-wasting issues. Alternatively, you could propose an innovative new intervention or digital display for the campus, to promote behaviour change.

Some potential approaches could be to develop a prototype or working example of:

1. A web tool or application: you could develop a new stand-alone tool to help gather ideas, suggestions and comments to improve UCL. This could use elements like rewards, gamification, photography or social media to encourage participation.

2. A plug-in for UCL’s website: you could develop an interface to sit within UCL’s existing website, making use of the large amount of traffic it receives to encourage participation and bring sustainability to life.

3. An intervention or display for UCL’s campus: you could develop a proposal for an innovative method of engaging members of the UCL community, using interactive digital screens, displays or sculpture.

The best initiative will receive a £500 prize and may be implemented across UCL.
