Nature-Smart Cities: UCL a home for bats

Join UCL's Sustainability team and UCL PhD student Dr Alison Fairbrass for a halloween inspired talk on our amazing and mysteries creatures of the nights- bats! Despite their scary reputation, bats are fascinating animals. Did you know they can fly at speeds of up to 35 miles per hour? Listen to cutting edge research into London bats and how UCL have deployed a bat sensing network in our new UCL East Campus to unravel the mysteries of bats at night.

UCL Hydrogen Festival 2017

The UCL Hydrogen and Sustainability Festival promises to be fun for all ages, and will be held in the UCL Main Quad and North Cloisters. This will involve a lively day full of stalls and hands-on introductions to hydrogen. Here, you can expect to find everything from a hydrogen-powered car to get into, to “green popcorn” to gorge on.

Open day at Sarah's Garden

Sarah’s Garden is a community project at the UCL Institute of Education (IOE). Created and maintained by students, staff and alumni, the garden is dedicated to the memory of Sarah Douglas, who is remembered with great warmth and affection for her work at UCLU and as General Manager of the IOE Student's Union.

Trees of Bloomsbury Walk

The Association of Bloomsbury Squares and Gardens together with Val Martin Memorial Walks are pleased to invite you to this free guided tree walk. Come and see some of the area’s splendid and unusual trees. View the New Zealand border in the beautiful Mecklenburgh Square garden, normally closed to the public. Another highlight is London’s second oldest plane tree in Brunswick Square, one of the city’s top ten trees. Guides are members of Goodenough College. Free (no tips)– but booking is essential.

The effects of busy roads on local people

Busy roads can have negative effects on people's mobility, wellbeing and health. The Street Mobility and Network Accessibility project has developed tools to measure and value the impacts of busy roads on local people. This free conference will tell practitioners, policy-makers, community groups, the public, and academics about the three-year multi-disciplinary research project. The project leader, Dr Jennifer Mindell, will give an overview of community severance, explaining its importance in relation to health, particularly among older people. Researchers from UCL’s Population Health Sciences, Engineering Sciences, and Built Environment Faculties will present some of the tools and research findings. The conference will also include the experiences and knowledge of local communities from a case study area and other speakers, including Valerie Shawcross CBE, Deputy Mayor of London for Transport. Lunch will be provided.

IGP Soundbite Repowering London

For this IGP Soundbite, we are lucky to hear from founder of Repowering London, Agemennon Otero. Founded in 2011, Repowering London empowers communities by establishing solar energy cooperatives. IGP Director's Seminar, Mark Miodownik, Materials for the 21st Century by UCL Institute for Gloabl Prospeity

Mark Miodownik is an accomplished materials engineer. He writes for The Guardian and The Times, and he is a regular presenter of engineering TV programmes the BBC. In 2013 he was awarded the Rooke Medal by the Royal Academy of Engineering. His book Stuff Matters was published in June 2013 and won the Royal Society Winton Prize and the US National Academies Keck Futures Prize. In 2016 he was awarded the American Association for the Advancement of Science Prize for Public Engagement with Science. In 2010 he was on The Times 2010 list of the top 100 most influential people in science.
